Elbert delighted in delivering contrary opinions to “stir the pot” for discussion. As a case in point, Thanksgiving is usually a time when we are kind to one another and speak thoughtfully of those things for which we are thankful, and also, have a very hearty meal. In his book, The Roycroft Dictionary, Concocted by Ali Baba and the Bunch on Rainy Days (1914), Elbert Hubbard defined Thanksgiving as: “Thanksgiving-Day in the United States is a national holiday on which all the people who during the past year have survived an earthquake, fire, housemaid’s knee, and death, overeat and thus thank God for his favoritism.”
Have a happy Thanksgiving regardless of which view you hold!
